Federico Cernuschi is an independent consultant specializing in the geology and geochemistry of magmatic and hydrothermal processes, with a focus on porphyry deposits. He integrates classic hand-lens observations and Anaconda-style mapping with trace element geochemistry, spectroscopy, and other analytical techniques. Fede provides continued support to First Quantum Minerals and services to companies like Rio Tinto, Fortescue, and several juniors. In these roles, he has worked on exploration projects of varied geology and age across more than 20 countries and has provided training to multiple global exploration teams for more than 15 years. His education includes UDELAR, Uruguay (B.S.), and Oregon State University (M.S. and Ph.D.).

Experience in different deposit types: porphyry, low and high sulfidation epithermal, cordilleran lodes, orogenic gold, ortomagmatic nickel, VMS, and sedimentary copper.

CONSULTING SERVICES:

1) Geology

  • Field mapping and core login using the Anaconda method
  • Compilation of data and interpretations in hand-made X-sections and maps
  • 3D compilation and interpretation using Leapfrog
  • Work with the company’s geos for training purposes (English/Spanish)
  • Focus on porphyry deposits
  • Geologic evaluation of early-stage prospects and ore deposits.

2) Training

  • On-site and remote workshops:
    • Porphyry geology,
    • Magmatic petrology,
    • Trace element geochemistry
    • Spectral geology (SWIR)
    • Interpretation of geochemical and spectral data using ioGAS, Leapfrog, and The Spectral Geologist.
    • Study programs developed according to the company’s needs and the team’s experience.
  • Hands-on training through fieldwork by mapping/logging with the company’s geos or working with geochemical data. Use of thin sections, petrography and automated mineralogy as support tools.

3) Geochemistry, hyperspectral, geometalurgy and 3D modeling

  • Studies of litogeochemistry, petrography, hydrothermal alteration, sulfide/sulfate/oxide speciation and trace element footprints.
  • Design and implementation of sampling of whole rock and soils
  • Whole rock and soil trace element analyses at commercial labs. Calibration and implementation of pXRF campaigns
  • Compilation of data and interpretations in X-sections and maps using ioGAS
  • 3D compilation and interpretation using Leapfrog
  • Applicable to all deposit types.

4) Petrography and other tools

  • Petrography of porphyry copper deposit-related samples with an in-house microscope (transmitted and reflected light).
  • QEMSCAN of rock samples and CL-imaging of quartz in veins of samples from any deposit types (Natural History Museum of London)
  • EMP and LA-ICP-MS compositional analyses (Oregon State University and CODES)
  • Interpretation of isotopic age data.
